What led me to start a family business in outdoor recreation?
Well… family and the outdoors!
Before Kristi and I were even married, we both knew we wanted to live in the country and spend the majority of our time in the outdoors. We’re not extreme outdoor adventurers – we’ve never traveled around the world on motorcycle, backpacked across the Alps, or traveled the Western United States while living out of a van. In fact, we’re far from extreme; we love our home in the country, our comfy bed, and try not to stray too far or for too long from either.
But we do love camping and exploring the wonderful places around Western Colorado and Eastern Utah. We also enjoy riding dirt bikes and ATVs on trails and four-wheel-drive roads through some of the more scenic and remote areas in the region.
Kristi and I started out backpacking and car camping, and swore we would never “sell out” and camp in a camper or RV. But four kids – one with disabilities – tend to provide a new perspective and less judgmental opinions. So we graduated from a tent to a pop-up camper to full-on comfort – camping with queen bed, A/C, and microwave!
It was also our kids that caused us to evolve into a dirt bike and ATV family. I was raised on a ranch and believed the only way to travel the back country was on horseback. When God blessed us with a rural home on 100 acres in the wide open country side and mountains around Glade Park, CO; Kristi and I were in heaven. But we knew living so far from work and schools in Grand Junction, CO would deprive our kids of many social and sporting opportunities. So when our oldest, Gavin asked for a dirt bike to ride on our property, I obliged. Seeing him ride by himself led me to buy one (that’s a story for another time), which led to the twins, Kaci Rae and Isaiah getting dirt bikes. Finally, when Kristi was tired of being left at home or camp with our handicapped daughter Kassidie, she got an ATV (eventually a side-by-side) so she and Kassidie could join in the fun.
There are lots of fun and interesting stories (to be shared some other time) that led up to this point; but this is the short story of how God’s blessings, a desire to be connected to family, and a passion for the outdoors led to a family business in the outdoors. In a way, our story is just beginning, and we hope you will come be a part of this new and exciting adventure with us. It will make our story more complete and hopefully give you lots of fun stories to share as well!
Blessings,
Andy
